Valkaama is a collaborative Open Source Movie Project.Scenes have already been shot and will be published soon. Everyone is encouraged to contribute to the post-production process in order to complete the movie. With your help our digital culture will be enriched by a unique Creative Commons licensed film. Help us to create, share, remix ... and to finish the Valkaama movie.
The Valkaama movie has been shot in summer and autumn 2007 with drama school students in and around the city of Krak?w, Poland. Defying the odds of a nonexistent budget and almost no free time on the part of the actors, the shooting schedule has been completed.
The movie itself is based on a novel written by Hendrik Behnisch, a young German writer who during his travels fell in love with Sweden and the Swedish culture. So when deciding to work on a drama, for him it was obvious to place the setting in Scandinavia. Once I came upon his novel I immediately was thinking of transforming it into a movie. And having to work on a thesis for my university degree I saw the chance of connecting something I have to do with something I want to do.
With only a script and a camera in my hand I came to Poland where I spent a lot of time before due to private reasons. Fortunately I was able to establish a contact with drama school students. Realizing the scenes with non-professional actors wouldn't have been possible since some of the characters are quite complex.
After finishing the scenes some time passed by in which we made a rough cut to see whether the film would work out. Additionally the trailer song was recorded, remixed and the trailers were realized. And with having sufficient material now to attract people to the Valkaama project, the time has finally come to publish it and to go Open Source.
As far as I know this is a unique step. There are already some Open Source Movies and some more Creative Commons licensed movies. But concerning the Open Source movies, they all publish their sources after releasing the movie so everyone is free to remix the finished film. There are only a few projects so far which open up the production process itself. But none of them has started filming yet.*
*If I am wrong here, I'd be happy to hear about.
